SHAVE-LAB Razor Review
I have to admit when I was asked to review some of the shave products from SHAVE-LAB I was a little apprehensive – only insomuch that I have seen multiple shaving products appear on the market this year that have been less than inspiring. However, happily, I was in for a little surprise.
To begin with, my shaving regimen of choice is a wet shave with a double-edged safety razor. I enjoy the preparation that goes into having what I consider a close shave that otherwise, generally can only be achieved by a professional barber. It’s rare that I use a multi-blade cartridge razor but I do have a few which I keep for a quick shave when in a hurry. When SHAVE-LAB came to me with their offering, the initial reluctance set-in then curiosity got the better of me and I decided to remove the shaving blinkers and give two of their razors a test.
Packaging and Presentation
I have to say I was duly impressed by SHAVE-LAB packaging – both razors, the sporty ZERO (Black Edition) and the Premium AON (Black Edition) came packaged in branded tissue paper and when opened it revealed a sleek and very stylish black presentation box holding the razor and refill blades. I was suitably impressed by the presentation and thought that they would make great gift ideas for men.
Shaving with SHAVE-LAB razors – The ZERO Sports Edition
After unpacking the razors I was now more than a little curious to try them out. I decided I was going to wait for a couple of days and start with a fresh shave on longer bristles. 48 hours later I cleansed my face in hot water and applied the shaving
I began thinking that maybe there is finally an alternative to the leading Gillette razors currently dominating the shaving market.
The first razor I tested with was the ZERO sports edition razor. The refill blade easily snapped into place and I let the razor (and blade) soak in hot water for a few minutes. Then came the moment of truth. I followed the principle of good shaving and applied wet shaving techniques to the SHAVE-LAB razor. This meant that after each stroke I rinsed the blade. As I drew down over my stubble the SHAVE-LAB razor gently followed the contour of my jaw and removed the hair in the first pass of the blade. I have to say I was impressed – I began thinking that maybe there is finally an alternative to the leading Gillette razors currently dominating the shaving market. I finished up the shave and rinsed off. I had my partner stroke her hand over my face – she found no after-shaving stubble and was met with squeaky clean skin!
I used the Sports edition of the SHAVE-LAB razor for the next few days and can honestly say I enjoyed the experience which includes ease-of-use and shape. The handle feels good in the hand, it has a rubber grip and is slightly arched to provide easier handling. As for aesthetics, I found the black version quite stylish and it looked great with the SHAVE-LAB travel case.
A Clean Shave with the AON – Premium Edition
After following the exact same routine as the Sports Edition razor I am happy to announce that I enjoyed the ‘clean shave’ close shaving experience. The AON premium version is much weightier. Really, I mean you know you have a solid shaving razor in your hand when you wield this blade. The handle is a smooth shiny black that gives the impression of Onyx with silver detailing. I enjoyed shaving with the AON. It’s one of those razors that you wouldn’t use in a rush but instead, it would be more suited as an inclusion in your weekend grooming regimen, when you have a little extra time on your hands. The handle is much larger and thicker than its sports counterpart but it does provide an equally close shave.
I mentioned above that I felt the SHAVE-LAB razors would be a good replacement for the current leading brand Gillette. I believe this would be the case as a low-cost and cheaper alternative to Gillette fusion blades, whilst still retaining the build of a quality razor.
