Aveda Skincare Treatments for Men
I’ve been an Aveda advocate for years and thus thought it about time I share my thoughts about their vision and the great services they offer to men, as well as women.
For me, there are so many positive reasons to choose Aveda products for maintaining healthy hair and skin. Firstly, for the natural botanically based products they use to create their skin and hair care products. Then there’s the sourcing of these natural ingredients from traditional communities around the world from the Amazon and South Africa to Morocco and Peru. By working with these traditional cultivators of nature, Aveda helps to provide them with a far better standard of living than they would otherwise experience.
Aveda (Sanskrit for ‘all knowledge’) Founder, Horst M. Rechalbacher clearly laid out his commitment to the environment when he started the company back in 1978, ‘striving to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility’ by ‘caring for the world’ creating products from the earth, and in turn ‘giving back to society’. Aveda was the first company to endorse the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES), an organisation responsible for raising corporate standards of performance and disclosure.
Aveda Spa Treatments for Men
When I moved from Los Angeles to New York back in 2004 I had to search for a spa therapist who could replace the fabulous Sally Powell, owner of Sienna Skincare in Topanga Canyon, CA who I’d used for many years for all my skincare treatments. I’ve pretty much received a facial treatment once a month for the past 25 years and truly believe it has helped keep my complexion looking healthy and reduced the signs of aging, so this was a matter of great importance.
I was living on a fairly tight budget when I first arrived in NYC so after much consideration decided to try out the Aveda Institute in Soho where I was treated by students who are at various stages of their beauty and skincare education. Though one receives a body or facial treatment in the same room as others (male and female), the room is curtained off into individual treatment cubicles and thus, you receive total privacy during the entire body care experience.
I spent 6 years in NYC and would say I probably visited the Aveda Institute once a month. I was worked on by students who had just begun the practical part of their training as well as those who were due to graduate. Every single one of the (mostly) girls who worked on me was very enthusiastic about Aveda and the beauty therapy course they had enrolled in. They clearly loved what they were taking on and excited to graduate and move into a full-time position within a professional spa or beauty salon.
Though some of the students were less comfortable with working on a client due to their lack of experience and confidence level, not once did I receive a facial treatment that I was not happy with or did not feel I should pay for. An instructor is on-hand to assist with any questions or problems a student or the client may have and following the initial facial cleanse the student confers with the instructor once they have (both) studied the clients skin to discern the correct skincare products that should be used on each individual client.
Aveda offer not only a structured facial treatment, i.e. cleanse, exfoliation, and hydration, but also a ‘sensory journey’ at the beginning of the treatment. This experience involves the client choosing one of three essential oils that will be added to the various skincare products used throughout the facial treatment. The client is asked to close their eyes and upon feeling the touch of the therapists finger to the centre of their forehead to inhale, one fragrance at a time. These essential oils may include:
- Tangerine which is known to promote happiness and is uplifting
- Rose which creates balance and calm and is soothing
- Eucalyptus which is purifying and invigorating
Another soothing benefit to an Aveda Institute facial treatment is the excellent head, neck and shoulder massage one receives towards the latter part of the session whilst the therapeutic mask is working on your needy skin! I am a big time massage advocate so for me this is one of the most soothing and relaxing parts of the treatment. Again, though students are at differing levels in their skincare training program I have always enjoyed each massage I have received at the Aveda Institute.
So, if you feel like giving yourself a fairly inexpensive treat that you’ll walk away from feeling rejuvenated and relaxed for the entire day, I suggest you check out one of the Aveda Institute salons that are now located in 24 countries around the World – you won’t be disappointed.
